The world of Gatorland, Florida,
is a 110 acre theme park and nature reserve, a few minutes away from
the tourist destinations of Disney World and Universal Studios.
Gatorland, Florida is a
different sort of experience from those kind of parks, as its main
feature and attraction is the massive collection of alligators and
crocodiles that the park houses.
There are a few train rides, and
shows based on performing alligators,
but the place where it all
happens is Alligator Island, home of the biggest of the park’s reptiles.

Gatorland, Florida is the best
place to see groups of alligators in their natural environment, and
also see some of the females nesting along the edges of the island.
The centre of the Island itself
holds many other forms of wildlife, including the amazing ‘Free Tail
Bats’,which nest in a specially built ‘bat-house’ on the island. These
bats emerge at night, eat insects, and then return to the bat house to
sleep it off.

Gatorland, Florida is also
famous for its breeding marsh: originally created as a breeding place
for the gators (to produce the next generation of Gatorland
inhabitants),
Soon after the marsh was
created, however, it became clear that there were more than just
‘gators breeding out here.
It had become home to Florida’s
native birdlife, such as herons and ibis.The alligators kept the
natural predators away, so it was an obvious choice.
Since the birds decided to live
there, Gatorland built a rookery to keep them in, ensuring that there
was another attraction for visitors to see; and it is now one of the
largest rookeries in Florida.

As well as encouraging people to
come and see the magnificent alligators, Gatorland also accommodates
other species, so even if you are not a fan of reptiles, there is still
plenty to see at Gatorland.
